Is Higher Education Still Worth the Cost?

This article goes deeper than the subject title might suggest - it has profound and not very promising message for my guys at the recovery houses.

Can the Middle Class Be Saved?

THE GREAT RECESSION HAS ACCELERATED THE HOLLOWING-OUT OF THE AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS. AND IT HAS ILLUMINATED THE WIDENING DIVIDE BETWEEN MOST OF AMERICA AND THE SUPER-RICH. BOTH DEVELOPMENTS HERALD GRAVE CONSEQUENCES. HERE IS HOW WE CAN BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN US.
By Don Peck

IN OCTOBER 2005, three Citigroup analysts released a report describing the pattern of growth in the U.S. economy. To really understand the future of the economy and the stock market, they wrote, you first needed to recognize that there was “no such animal as the U.S. consumer,” and that concepts such as “average” consumer debt and “average” consumer spending were highly misleading.

What The City offers that Facebook can’t | The City | Church Software

What The City offers that Facebook can’t

Many people ask us if The City is basically just the church’s version of Facebook. Our subscribing churches don’t think so!

Here at The City, we actually embrace Facebook and what it can offer you.  However, Facebook cannot meet all of your church’s needs, which is why The City focuses on increasing your church’s vitality and engagement.
ENGAGEMENT!  Churches using The City have over 70% of their members, on average, engaged in regular community each month.  This is much higher than the same statistic for Facebook, which is only 50%, and much higher than what most churches were able to achieve offline previously.   So, the many ways to communicate, share, and grow via The City are drawing in higher usage than even the world’s biggest social network!
Authenticity and Privacy. With The City, you have much more control over who sees your updates, your messages, and your prayer requests, which allows you to be much more authentic and real.   You can share deep stuff and be confident that it will be private.
Small Groups. The City allows your church to manage small groups online with much more control and flexibility than Facebook offers.  You can have a flexible structure, delegated leaders, better privacy, events, and engagement metrics.
Focused Communication. The average Facebook user is connected with 80 community pages, groups, and events.  How can your church communication rise above that noise?  With The City, your church can communicate key messages in a focused way.
Advertising. Facebook is constantly pushing ads to its users.  With The City, the only promotions your members will see are the church promotions that your church wants!
Protection. With Facebook being so large, it is constantly under attack by hackers, viruses, and malware.  Your church will have none of this with The City.

You Export What You Are Manufacturing

You Export What You Are Manufacturing

A good word from Doug Wilson for both missions “goers” and “senders”:

What you practice at home is the show you take on the road. What you grow in your fields is what you load on the trucks. Compassing sea and land doesn’t generate a new message. The way you live when you get on the plane is going to be the single best indicator of how you live when you get off the plane. In short, don’t expect geographical location to fix anything.

We agree to disagree here

This short post says it all - quoting from the conclusion: " So it seems that whatever else we may disagree on as Catholics, Liberals, and Evangelicals, we should at least agree that it is our view of Scripture and authority that divides us.

Men's Event Friday February 11th

I am more than excited to tell you about our next men’s event Friday February 11th.   Of course we’ll feature our outstanding fellowship and wonderful meal featuring steak, salmon, or chicken.  In addition we’re pleased to have a guest speaker, Major Daniel Gade, who will speak about God’s sovereignty and grace during combat & recovery.  I can’t do justice to Dan’s story here, so read what some folks at UGA had to say, below.  And, then, hit reply to tell me a yes, no or maybe. Thanks, Larry Atkins – for the MIC Steering Committee.

Major Daniel Gade.  Major Gade is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and is finishing his PhD in political science at UGA.  His topic is "God's Sovereignty and Plan for Our Lives."  This will not be a theoretical topic for Major Gade, but an understanding that has been forged in the crucible of serving in Iraq and suffering the loss of one of his legs  Dan Gade is a remarkable person.  I have heard him speak twice and was impressed with his honesty and humility as he tells his story, his accomplishments both before and after his injury, and his down-to-earth perspectives on life, death, and loving God in the midst of personal tragedy.
